Legacy of Oz Slots

The Wizard of Oz has been a part of the pop culture lexicon for over a hundredsof years. First, there was the popular series that started it all, then it became the beloved technicolor movie, and now it is the Legacy of Oz slot game. This game is definitely based on the books versus the movies, and probably takes a few creative liberties itself. How can a slot game be Wizard of Oz themed, and are the features great and powerful? These questions and more are answered in this review.

These Graphics Aren’t in Kansas Anymore

You’ll notice that this game doesn’t take on the art style of the original books or the movie. Instead, it forges its own path with an art style that almost has a Japanese animation tone to it. There isn’t much to write home about in regards to the background. It looks as though it is meant to be the wizard’s castle. Everything is static, and apart from a few crystals that have been drawn to look like they are shimmering, there isn’t much to catch the eye here.

The game employs the standard playing card symbols that one expects from a slot game, but they dress them up a little. Each symbol has a diamond-shaped gem placed somewhere on the number or letter. An odd choice the developers made was to not have many aspects of Oz in the symbols. What could have easily been the characters of Oz, like the Lion and Tin Man, have been replaced with potion bottles of different colors and shapes. The only other symbols you’ll see are the Wizard and the Book of Oz. So, as far as symbols go, there aren’t many, but the developers did put plenty of attention to detail into them.

One should not hold out hope for the audio portion of this game. The theme music starts calm and mysterious to the point where you can almost ignore it completely. However, it builds from a haunting piano song to a marching band that’s so distracting you’re almost guaranteed to reach for the mute button. The sound effects are similarly loud, but at least when you experience those, you know you’ve won something.

Are These Spins Good or Wicked?

Legacy of Oz has some solid bonus features, but it isn’t the features that steal the show; it’s your ability to activate them. This game uses a HyperSpins feature that allows you to pick a single reel and respin it for a price. So, if you are ever one symbol off from unlocking a bonus, you can spin that reel again to increase your odds.

The Book of Oz doubles as a scatter symbol, and when you land three or more in a single spin, you get eight, twelve, or twenty free spins. When you unlock the free spins a special symbol is selected upfront which becomes an expanding symbol after all the other wins are awarded for the potential for more wins. Something that players will love is if you land between two and five scatters during the free spins it will activate more free spins and an additional special expanding symbol.

In a bit of a strange decision, this game does not offer the most basic of bonus features, the Wild. However, the fact that you can basically manipulate your reels to get you into the bonus round and then keep you there for a while probably makes the idea of not having a wild not seem as bad. Everyone loves free spins, and if you activate the free spins inside of the free spin game enough times, you can fill your entire board with special expanding symbols for massive prizes.

There’s No Place Like Home

If you ask anyone who enjoys online slots, there is nothing like enjoying them from the pleasure of your home. What better theme to use than the Wizard of Oz? This game could definitely be better. It is easy on the eyes, but there is not much diversity to enjoy. The music isn’t great, but it’s acceptable, and the bonus features are fun, but it feels like they stop short of being truly exciting. Legacy of Oz feels like it is a mid-tier game that has dressed itself up to seem like more than it is. That being said, it is still worth trying to see if the HyperSpins feature is something you enjoy.
